Swore off oyster shell grit for 5 months, then a soft egg at 6am changed my tune
I used to think crushed oyster shell was just a way for feed companies to squeeze a few extra bucks out of folks, so I fed my eight hens layer pellets and nothing else. Then in February one of my Barred Rocks dropped a shell so thin it split right in my hand when I picked it up, and I panicked and started reading everything I could find. It took me 17 days of messing around with calcium this and crushed eggshell that before my neighbor Dana, who has kept birds for 20 years, asked if I was even offering free-choice grit and shell separately. I set out a small dish of oyster shell the next morning, they pecked at it like candy, and within about 9 days the shells came back thick and hard. Turns out I was solving a problem I had invented by skipping the simplest step. Now I keep the dish topped up and wonder why I made it so hard on myself. Anyone have a way to keep the dish from getting scratched full of bedding?
