Switched from pine shavings to sand in my coop, and 3 months in I'm never going back
I was dumping $30 of pine shavings into that 4x8 coop every 3 weeks and still fighting smell, so I switched to a bag of construction sand from the yard in Tucson, and now I just scoop it with a kitty litter rake every morning, so what's stopping the rest of you from making the switch?
Switched to sand last spring and my back is still thanking me for not hauling shavings bags every month. Wish I'd done it sooner instead of being stubborn about it for two years like some kind of chicken coop genius. Scooping with a rake sure beats raking through wet pine that's glued to the floor.
