Serious question, does anyone else think deep litter is way better than the clean-every-week setup?
Honestly I switched my 8 hens from scooping poop every Saturday to the deep litter method about 5 months back and I'm never going back. My coop used to stink within 3 days even with pine shavings, now I just toss in more bedding and turn it once a week with a rake. The litter breaks down on its own, the smell is basically gone, and I use the composted stuff on my tomato beds in Spring. Everyone on the local Facebook group keeps telling me it's gross and I'll get sick birds, but my girls are healthier than ever. Has anyone else had this blow up in their face or is it actually the move long term?

Sounds nice until you get a wet winter and that litter turns into a soggy mat that breeds mold and mites. I tried it for a season and ended up with respiratory crap going through my flock plus a coop floor I had to scrape down to bare wood. Compost pile is great but you're gambling with your birds' lungs every time it stays damp for a week.
