Question about the cheap plastic egg turner trick that saved my broody hen setup
My broody hen kept rolling eggs out of the nest box and I was losing about 2 chicks every clutch to crushed or cold eggs. I tried moving her to a dog crate with a towel, but she still shoved eggs into the corners. Then a lady at the feed store in Kalispell suggested cutting a cheap plastic ice cube tray down to a flat grid and setting it under the straw so the eggs sit in little cups. Took me 10 minutes with a utility knife and the next 3 hatches went 11 for 11. The eggs stay put even when she does her little nest dance and I just lift the whole tray to candle. Has anyone else tried something like this or found a better way to keep a clumsy hen from scrambling her clutch?
