One tip about rooster feed changed my whole flock routine

I used to free feed my birds all day because I figured they knew best, but a neighbor at the feed store told me I was wasting money and letting my hens get lazy. She said to switch to a set morning and evening schedule, which I fought at first since my rooster free ranges so much. After two weeks of measured portions, my egg count went up by 4 per week and the flock stopped picking at the feeder out of boredom. Does anyone else stick to strict feeding times or do you let them graze and see what works? I'm still on the fence about going back to free choice.

My neighbor's turkeys only eat when the lawnmower runs, so feeding schedules are just a polite suggestion around here.
