One rough week with hawk attacks and a stubborn rooster

Last Tuesday I lost two hens to a hawk in one hour. Then my rooster Duke started hiding in the coop instead of sounding the alarm. I spent three days building a PVC hoop cover, cost about $35 in netting. The very next morning Duke finally squawked and chased the hawk off. Crazy how one bad week flips everything once you figure out the weak point. Has anyone else dealt with a rooster that goes silent in a crisis? What worked for you?
