My neighbor swears pine shavings cause respiratory problems, I say it is all about airflow
So my neighbor Dale has been raising chickens for 15 years and he just told me I am slowly killing my flock by using pine shavings in the coop. He claims the dust causes respiratory infections and he only uses sand. I have run pine for 3 years with 9 hens and never had a single breathing issue, and I clean it out every 10 days. My thinking is that bedding matters way less than ventilation, because a coop with no airflow is gonna be damp and gross no matter what you put on the floor. Dale's setup has two big vents cut into the walls and mine does too, so the bedding is not the real difference here. Am I missing something about pine dust or is he just set in his ways? Would like to hear from folks who switched from one to the other and what actually changed for them.

A study from UC Davis found pine dust is only a problem when moisture tops 15 percent.
