My neighbor said my coop was too clean, now I'm second guessing everything
My neighbor Dale stopped by last Saturday while I was scrubbing out the waterer and told me I was doing more harm than good by keeping the coop spotless. He has kept hens for 30 years and said a little dirt and bedding build up actually helps their immune systems and keeps the good bacteria around. I have been cleaning my 6 hens' coop every single week for 2 years because I thought that was the right thing to do. Now I'm wondering if I've been stressing them out with all the scrubbing and fresh shavings. How often do you all clean your coops, and has anyone else heard this from an old timer?
