My grandma's old egg basket finally fell apart after 40 years of use (and I can't find a replacement that feels right)
I was cleaning out my coop yesterday and noticed the handle on her old wicker basket just snapped. Must've been from the 70s or 80s, she used it every morning to collect eggs. I've been looking online and all I see are these plastic bins or metal wire things. None of them have that same gentle weave, you know? It held like 18 eggs without cracking one. My neighbor suggested I try a local craft fair but I dunno if anyone even makes baskets like that anymore. Has anyone found a decent egg basket that actually lasts or am I stuck getting something modern?

My neighbor had the same problem last year with her mom's old basket. She ended up finding a guy at a flea market who restores vintage wicker stuff and he fixed hers with new cane weaving. Cost her like 20 bucks and you can't even tell where the repair is. Might be worth checking if there's someone near you who does that sort of thing before giving up on your grandma's basket entirely.

Man I had almost the exact same thing happen with a rocking chair my wife's grandmother left us. The cane seat was completely shot, all busted up and sagging. I found this old timer down at the local farmers market who'd been repairing wicker and cane stuff for like forty years. He did the whole seat for thirty bucks and it came back looking brand new, even matched the original pattern perfect. It's one of those skills that's dying out honestly, but there's still people around who know how to do it right. You just gotta ask around at flea markets or antique shops, those old guys usually know somebody.
