My automatic chicken coop door got stuck open at 3am last Tuesday and let a raccoon in
I found three of my hens dead in the morning and now I'm trying to decide between fixing the old door or just getting a manual latch system has anyone dealt with this kind of failure before?

Did you check if the door mechanism failed from a power surge or just a simple jam?
