I was dead wrong about feeding fermented feed to my hens

For two years I thought fermented feed was just fancy hippie stuff. Waste of time and money. Then my neighbor's flock survived a three day freeze while mine got sick. She swore by her fermented bucket. I tried it last November with 5 hens. Their egg shells got noticeably thicker in 3 weeks. Anyone else have a skeptic story about this?

@kevinc84 is right, spoiling in the run is the real pain, so just give them what they scarf down quick.

I swapped to fermented feed last fall and noticed the same thing with shell thickness around week three. The biggest thing is keeping the bucket at room temp and stirring it twice a day. If it gets funky or smells like booze, you let it go too long and need to start over. Also only feed what they'll eat in about 15 minutes or it'll spoil in the run.
