Drove 45 mins to an exotic feed store and found out my chickens hate the fancy mealworms

Last Saturday I made the trip out to Critter Creek Feed in Boulder because I heard they had dried black soldier fly larvae. My girls turned their beaks up at it and walked away, then went straight for the cracked corn I spilled on the ground. Anyone else have chickens that won't touch the expensive stuff?

Crushed ice works better than fancy treats for my crew. I froze blueberries in a big block of ice last summer and they went nuts pecking at it. Also tried those expensive dried mealworms once, total waste of money. They prefer regular scratch grains and the occasional watermelon rind.

Dried mealworms are fine as a treat but you gotta get the non-GMO ones from a reputable source. Had a buddy who bought cheap ones off Amazon and his hens stopped laying for a week. The good stuff is pricier but worth it for the protein boost during molting. Freezing stuff in ice blocks is smart though. My girls go crazy for frozen corn and peas mixed in water.
