Warning: my fence gate sagged for 8 months and a $4 turnbuckle fixed it in 10 minutes
Last Saturday my neighbor Rick came over to help me hang a new gate and he pointed at the sag on my old one and just laughed. Turns out the whole thing was pulling loose because my 4x4 post had twisted about half an inch, so instead of digging a new post I ran a turnbuckle kit from the top corner down to the bottom hinge and cranked it snug. Gate swings level now and it cost me less than a coffee. I felt dumb for waiting so long to try the cheap fix first. Anyone got tips for keeping cedar posts from twisting in the first place, or is that just what cedar does?
Man, I know that dumb feeling well, waited two years on a sagging shed door before a $3 bracket sorted it out. Cedar does like to twist as it dries, so picking straighter grain and sealing the end cuts helps some, but it's mostly just the wood being wood. At least you've got a fix that works now.
