Used to dig fence post holes with a shovel. Now I rent a PTO auger and it's way better.

For years I dug every post hole by hand with a clamshell digger. Took me all weekend to set 8 posts for a new fence section. Last spring a neighbor let me borrow his tractor with a PTO auger. Did 12 holes in under 2 hours with way less back pain. Has anyone else switched to power tools for fence work and regretted not doing it sooner?

Caught my buddy Dave trying to dig post holes with a shovel last summer. Showed up with my little tractor and auger and drilled 10 holes in like 20 minutes. His back was killing him after just two holes by hand. He literally stood there with his mouth open watching me go. Now he's always texting me asking to borrow the tractor for random projects lmao.

Did you ever read that study from some ag extension about how hand digging versus mechanized digging affects soil compaction? It's pretty interesting because the auger actually loosens the dirt better in some soils versus the shovel just smashing it around. Your buddy's back is definitely better off with the tractor, but so is the ground itself for whatever he's planting or building in those holes.
