Showerthought: I swore off cheap fence posts until the $9 pressure treated ones at the Tacoma yard outlasted my fancy cedar
Two summers ago I dropped about $400 on fancy cedar posts for my back fence because everyone online swore the cheap pressure treated stuff from the local yard in Tacoma would rot in 3 seasons. Well, the cedar ones started bowing and splitting by month 14, while the 3 cheapo posts I stuck in as backups by the gate are still straight and solid. Anyone else had a cheap material quietly beat the expensive stuff, or did I just get lucky with one good batch?
Man, I feel this in my bones! I did the same thing with deck boards a few years back, paid almost double for some "premium" stuff that cupped and splintered within two seasons, while the basic boards I used for a shed ramp are still flat as can be. It really makes you wonder if half of what we read online is just people repeating stuff they heard from someone else. Your backup posts by the gate outlasting the cedar is a nice little twist of fate. I would just keep an eye on them and enjoy the win.
