Neighbor said my fence posts would rot in 5 years if I didn't use gravel, had to prove him wrong
After 3 summers of rain and snow in Portland, my cedar posts are still solid as day one because I backfilled with pea gravel instead of dirt, so has anyone else had a know-it-all neighbor who turned out to be totally wrong about basic drainage?

Read a piece from a fencing contractor online that said the real killer isn't the dirt itself, it's the lack of airflow and trapped moisture against the wood. Pea gravel basically gives the water somewhere to go and lets the post breathe, so your neighbor had the right idea but the wrong material. Cedar's naturally rot resistant too, so as long as you're not planting them in straight clay mud, you're probably fine for way longer than five years. Glad it's working out for you, that's a solid win.
