Just realized my cedar fence was rotting from the bottom up
Always blamed rain splash for the rot near the posts. Took a second look last week after digging out one post and saw the concrete collar was holding moisture against the wood. Switched to gravel backfill on the other 23 posts. Anyone else ditch concrete bases for gravel?

Wow, gravel really fixed all your moisture problems? I had a contractor tell me concrete is basically a sponge that wicks water into the post base over time, and once that wraps around the wood it never dries out... do you think that's actually true or was he just trying to upsell me? Because I've got the same rot issue in my back yard and I'm about to replace about 14 posts myself. Did you go with just plain gravel or did you mix in some sand for drainage too? And how deep did you end up digging the new holes compared to before?
