Two compasses, one trail, big lesson on the Wind River Range
Last month I hiked the Cirque of the Towers loop with my old lensatic compass. Battery died on my GPS two days in. I switched to a cheap baseplate compass from a shop in Lander. The lensatic forced me to take bearings from specific landmarks, which kept me on the right gully every time. The baseplate made me guess from the map and I went a half mile off route. Anyone else find a simple tool beats the fancy gear?
