The fancy trekking poles I bought on a whim turned out to be dead weight

Ngl, I dropped $180 on a pair of carbon fiber trekking poles a couple years ago when I was prepping for a trip in the Smokies. Everyone online swore they cut joint pain and made climbs feel easy. Tbh, they rode strapped to my pack for 90 percent of the trail because the rocky terrain made them more hassle than help. I ended up leaving them at a hostel in Gatlinburg for some kid who seemed stoked, no regrets. My $30 aluminum sticks from a pawn shop have done me fine on every hike since. Anyone else bought gear that looked great in the store but totally missed the mark on an actual route?

Feels like half my gear lives that life, so I get it.
