The $160 GPS unit I swore by is now a paperweight on the JMT

Bought a dedicated topo GPS last spring before the Sierra section, but after 60 miles my $15 phone app with downloaded offline maps proved more reliable, so has anyone else ditched their fancy hardware for a basic waterproof phone setup?

Ditched mine after I realized the screen kept freezing in the cold and the battery died way too fast on a 4 day stretch. My phone with Gaia offline maps did the same job plus I could text my wife at night when I got signal. The GPS unit is now sitting in my car door pocket collecting dust. Honestly the only thing it did better was surviving a drop on rocks, but my phone has a case that handles that fine. You're not alone on this, I think the fancy gear crowd is slowly coming around to the simple setup.

Funny thing is my old handheld survived being run over by a truck, but I still can't figure out how to turn it on.
