Should trail markers stay painted or go back to cairns on the AT in Virginia?
Hiked the Triple Crown near Daleville last weekend and saw fresh orange blazes every 50 feet, but also a few old rock piles, which got me thinking, are we overmarking wild spaces to the point it kills the adventure, or is clear signage more important than keeping it rugged?

Whoa, wait, fresh orange blazes every 50 feet? That's insane! I get needing to find the trail, but at that point you're basically following a painted line through the woods, not a wilderness. Cairns feel a bit more like a treasure hunt, you know, spotting the next stack of rocks and feeling like you actually earned the route.
