Serious question, my bear can lid popped off mid trip on the Northville Placid Trail and I ate like a raccoon for 2 days

So last Thursday I was about 12 miles into a 4 day stretch on the NPT, near the Cedar River lean to, and I set my bear can down on a rock to grab dinner. The lid latch just snapped clean off. No warning, no crack, it was 3 months old and I had maybe 6 trips on it. For 2 days every meal was me fighting with a lid that would not stay shut and hanging my food bag from a branch like a total rookie. I ended up lashing the lid shut with 3 feet of paracord I had for my tarp, which worked but was a mess to open every single time. Has anyone dealt with a latch failure like this, and did the company actually do anything about it or did you just buy a new one?
