Question about the Smokies, why does everyone skip the quieter trails?

I spent 4 days in Great Smoky Mountains National Park last month and the main route was packed with people taking selfies, while the side trail up to Spence Field had maybe 3 other hikers all day, so am I missing something about why everyone sticks to the crowded paths or is it just me?

Spence Field was the highlight of my whole trip last year, and I used to be one of those people glued to the main trails until I got dragged up there. Now I almost want to keep it a secret, but honestly the quiet ones are the real Smokies.
