Overheard a thru-hiker say maps are for old people
I was at a gear shop in Gatlinburg and this kid said GPS on his watch is all he needs. Made me think about all those paper maps I still carry out of habit, anyone else still stuff a folded map in their pack?

Wait, this kid actually said maps are for old people? I feel like that's a recipe for getting lost when your watch battery dies on day three. Watches freeze up or break way easier than a crumpled piece of paper stuffed in a zip lock bag.

Right? Next they'll say compasses are a scam and they just spin in circles for fun until their phone dies.

Totally agree with you on this. Paper maps are just more reliable when you get out of cell range or something freezes up, which happens more often than people admit. Watches are great until they aren't, but a folded map in a ziploc has never let me down.
