My map said the trail was 8 miles, but my GPS logged 11.5 after all the switchbacks.
Found this out the hard way on the Timberline Loop in Oregon last fall. Anyone else have a route that was way longer than advertised?

Oh man, the "way longer than advertised" thing is so real. My buddy did a hike in the Smokies last spring where the sign said 4 miles to the waterfall. He ended up walking over 7 miles round trip because the path kept splitting and the markers were confusing. He was not happy when he finally got back to the car.

Happens all the time with trail signs. They often measure the distance "as the crow flies" instead of the actual walking path. Makes for a very long, grumpy day.

Read somewhere that some parks use GPS distances instead of trail length.

Timberline Loop is notorious for that, I got a solid 12 miles out of what was supposed to be a 9 mile day on the Wonderland Trail in Washington. The switchbacks and all the little detours for water and views add up fast. Trail maps are basically just suggestions, you never really know what you're in for until you're out there.
