My dad said to skip the switchbacks on the High Sierra Trail and I should have listened

He told me to just go straight up the slope to save time, but honestly it was a huge mistake. The loose rock gave way about halfway up and I slid down almost 20 feet, scraping up my leg pretty bad. Tbh I ended up losing over an hour dealing with that and getting back on the actual trail. Has anyone else had a stubborn moment like that where going off-route really bit you?

You slid 20 feet on loose rock? That's terrifying.

Yeah that "save time" idea is such a trap... I did something similar trying to cut across a scree field once. Thought I'd be smart and avoid the long way around. Ended up spending an hour just trying not to twist an ankle with every step sliding out from under me. My friend had to come back and help me across. The direct route is almost never faster when there's loose stuff.

But sometimes the shortcut works out fine... it's not always a disaster.
