My cousin told me his favorite part of the PCT was the section he didn't plan for
We were looking at my old map of the John Muir Trail last week, the one I did in 2018. He pointed to a random side trail near Evolution Valley and said he got lost there for half a day, and it was the best part of his whole trip because he saw a bear and her cubs. It made me realize I've been so focused on sticking to the main route that I miss the cool detours. Do you guys ever leave room in your plans for unmarked trails?

Lol my plans are basically just suggestions at this point. Getting lost is half the fun, as long as you find your way back before dark.

Ever get that feeling you're missing the real story? My best memories are always the wrong turns... you gotta leave space for a little surprise.

Oh man, you hit on something real there. I did the Wonderland Trail a few years back and my best day was when I took a wrong turn and ended up at this tiny unnamed lake. Stayed there for an hour just watching the water, completely off my planned route. In my experience, the unmarked stuff is always the best. I try to leave half days open on every trip now just in case I spot something random worth chasing. Your mileage may vary but I think that's where the magic lives.
