My buddy swore the shortcut would save us 2 hours on the Olympic Peninsula loop
He told me to skip the Hoh River trail and take the logging road cutoff near Lake Quinault. I followed his advice last August and we ended up stuck behind a washed out bridge for 45 minutes, then had to backtrack 12 miles. The old Hoh route would've been longer but way more reliable. Has anyone else gotten burned by a shortcut that someone swore was a time saver?

Gotta push back on this one a little bit. I've taken that Quinault logging road cutoff maybe half a dozen times over the years and it's saved me real time more often than not. The trick is checking the county road conditions page before you leave, especially after a wet spring like we had this year. That bridge washout was probably from a storm the week before, not a hidden flaw in the route itself. Your buddy might have just gotten unlucky timing, or maybe he didn't check the alerts before he told you about it. The Hoh trail is beautiful but it's also packed with RVs crawling along at 25 mph, so I'll take my chances with the logging roads most days.
