I wasted $85 on a bear canister for the Sierra and I feel dumb
Last June I bought a BearVault BV500 for a 4 day trip in the Sierra thinking I needed max protection. It weighs 2 pounds 9 ounces and took up half my pack. Every night I had to spend 10 minutes finding a flat spot to wedge it between rocks because it rolls. My buddy just hung his food in a tree with 50 feet of paracord and a rock, cost him 6 bucks total. I switched to a Ursack Major and a Opsak, which together weigh 8 ounces and cost me 90 dollars. The bear canister now holds my car emergency kit. Has anyone else ditched the hard canister for an Ursack in areas where it's allowed?
