I finally cracked the code on water crossings without soaking my boots

Last week on the Lost Coast Trail, I got tired of wading through creeks every mile, so I tried tying my boots to my pack and wearing cheap water shoes with thick wool socks over them. The socks wicked the water off my feet and kept the gravel from digging in, and my boots stayed dry the whole 4-mile stretch. Has anyone else tried something like this or found a better trick for keeping boots dry on wet routes?

Huh, I have to disagree - wet socks over water shoes seems like it'd chafe and blister something fierce.

Merino wool socks helped me avoid blisters @reesepatel.
