Dropped $340 on a quilt before a trip in Big Bend, and it was the best and dumbest money I ever threw at gear
Bought a 20 degree quilt for $340 right before a 4 night loop in Big Bend last January, mostly because my old bag weighed almost 4 pounds and I was sick of it. First night at 28 degrees it kept me warm enough, but I rolled off my pad twice because I never practiced with a quilt at home beforehand. Second night a cold front pushed it down to about 19 and I was up at 2am doing squats next to a rock to stay warm. The quilt saved my base weight, no doubt, but it almost burned me because I had zero nights on it before the real thing. Anyone else buy a big ticket item days before a trip and just hope for the best?
