Am I the only one who switched from planning routes on paper maps to an app, and now I can't decide which is better?
For about 12 trips I would spread a paper map on the floor and mark every campsite with a pencil, and that worked fine until I missed a water source in the Shenandoah in 2021 and hiked 8 extra miles thirsty. Now I plan everything in an app on my phone, but last month the battery died on day two near Grayson Highlands and I was back to guessing. The paper never runs out of power, but the app shows me mileage and elevation in seconds. So which one do you trust when it counts, and has a dead phone ever burned you on a route?
Did the paper map really work fine though, if the Shenandoah trip left you thirsty? A dead phone sucks but a map won't show you where you went wrong until you're already there.
