A ranger in Yosemite told me my 40-mile loop plan was 'a great way to get hurt' and suggested a 22-mile alternative.

What's a time someone gave you a route reality check that actually saved your trip?

Friend tried to hike the Cathedral Lakes loop in August one year. Had this whole 28-mile route planned out. A ranger told him half of it was still under snow and he'd need an ice axe and crampons for one section. Switched to a 14-mile day hike and had a great time. That ranger saved him from a seriously miserable trip.

Honestly, a park volunteer once pointed out my planned creek crossing was for spring melt, not August. I would have spent half a day looking for a river that was just a dry rock bed. Sometimes local knowledge is the only map you need.

That "local knowledge" idea is so true, it can save your trip or even your life.
