Showerthought: I used a zip tie to fix a stripped oil drain plug hole... and it held for a year.

A customer brought in an old Civic with a completely stripped oil pan thread. They couldn't afford a new pan. In a moment of pure desperation, I wrapped the plug threads with a heavy-duty zip tie, cranked it in, and hoped. It didn't leak a drop until they finally traded the car in. Has anyone else ever pulled off a crazy temporary fix that just... kept working?

Honestly, that zip tie trick is a perfect example of engineering. It's not about the "right" part, it's about solving the problem with what you have. The real skill is understanding the forces at play, like the pressure and the seal. That fix worked because you knew how to make the zip tie act like a thread locker and a gasket. Sometimes the best solution is the one that gets the car back on the road.

That kind of fix makes me really nervous though. Calling it engineering feels like a stretch. It's more like luck that it held. If that zip tie had failed on the highway, that person could have lost all their oil and wrecked the engine or caused a crash. Getting the car back on the road is important, but so is making sure it's actually safe to drive. Sometimes the cheap fix just pushes a bigger problem onto someone else down the line.

Lmao that's amazing. It's wild how often the "good enough for now" fix just becomes the permanent solution. I see it all the time with stuff around the house, like a book propping up a wobbly table leg that never gets replaced. Makes you wonder how much of the world is held together by zip ties and hope.
