Rant: A shop in Tacoma showed me a different way to handle rusted bolts
I was helping a friend with his truck's brake lines, and every fitting was seized solid with rust. The shop owner came out, sprayed them with a mix of ATF and acetone he called 'Ed's Red,' waited ten minutes, and they came right off. Now I'm torn between sticking with my usual penetrating oil or mixing my own brew. What's your go-to for frozen hardware?

Try heating the bolt first, then quenching it with oil.

Ugh, that trick is a lifesaver when things are really stuck... it's saved me so much time and frustration. Always feels like a little victory when it finally breaks free.

Take it a step further and hit that bolt with some penetrating oil after you quench it. The heat expands the bolt, the oil shocks it and draws in the lube. That combo has never let me down on a rusted exhaust manifold bolt. Just don't go overboard with the heat if you're near anything plastic or rubber. Works like a charm every time.
