PSA: I stopped using a timing light on every tune up and my comeback rate dropped
Back when I started at a shop off Colfax in Denver around 2009, every tune up got the timing light on it, no questions asked. You'd hook it up, bump the distributor, watch the mark dance, and call it done. Now with so many coils and crank sensors doing the work, I mostly just watch live data on the scanner and check for misfires cylinder by cylinder. I still keep the old light in my bottom drawer because every now and then a guy rolls in with a carbed small block and it's the only thing that'll tell the truth. What got me was a 2014 Silverado that idled rough and threw no codes, and the light wouldn't have helped one bit, it was a dirty throttle body the whole time. So now I scope first, light second, and I've cut my comebacks way down. Anybody else still hanging onto their light out of habit, or did you finally toss it?
