Just had to pick between a used factory turbo and a cheaper rebuilt one for a 2018 EcoBoost job
I went with the used one from a local yard for $750 and it's been running fine for three months, but I'm still wondering if the extra $200 for a full rebuild kit would've been smarter in the long run.

Consider the hidden cost of your own time. A rebuild kit means hours of labor you're not getting paid for, which could easily be worth more than the price difference. You probably made the right call just getting back on the road.

What about the hidden cost of my sanity? After a long day, the last thing I want is to spend my evening covered in grease, missing one tiny part, and having my car in pieces. Paying a bit more to have it done right and fast feels like buying back my free time. That time is worth more to me than any money I might have saved.

Whoa, hold on a second. So you're telling me that time spent fixing your own car is somehow worth zero dollars? In my experience, that's a pretty bold claim, and I'm not sure it adds up. I gotta ask, @noranguyen, did you actually factor in the mental cost of a botched job or the stress of being without your car for an extra day? Because your mileage may vary, but I've seen people burn a whole weekend on a repair and still end up having to take it to a shop, paying double for labor they could have avoided. It's not just about the hourly rate you could be making elsewhere, it's about the real-world headaches that come with DIY work.
