I finally stopped using impact guns on lug nuts after 12 years, and my comeback rate on wheel noise dropped
For years I told every new guy the same thing, zip them on, torque wrench after, no big deal. That is what I was taught at the shop on Grand Ave back in 2011 and I never questioned it. Then a customer came back three times in two weeks with a shimmy at 60. New balance, new rotors, still there. Turned out the impact had stretched two studs just enough that the torque wrench was reading false. I bought a set of torque sticks and a good 1/2 inch breaker bar, now I hand start every lug and run them down with a ratchet first. Sounds slow, but I quit chasing wheel noise callbacks almost completely. My question for the older guys, do you still trust torque sticks or is hand torque the only way? Want to know if I am overdoing it.
