An old timer at the parts counter asked why I was torqueing lugs in the air, and it stuck with me
I was at a NAPA in Tucson about two weeks ago picking up a water pump and this older guy behind the counter watched me talking to a customer on the phone about lug nut specs. He waited till I hung up and asked if I was still snugging everything down with the impact before the torque wrench. I said yeah, most of the time, and he just nodded and said "that's how you stretch a stud without knowing it." He told me he'd seen wheels come back into his old shop with warped rotors and snapped studs because guys were hitting 150 ft-lbs with a gun before ever checking anything by hand. I've been running my own bays for a while and honestly I've been guilty of that short cut more than I want to admit. The part that got me is he wasn't preachy about it, he just said it like it was a fact of life. Now I'm wondering how many comebacks I've blamed on cheap parts when it was really my own wrist doing the damage. Has anyone here switched to hand-snugging lugs first and actually seen fewer issues down the road?
