A wheel bearing job on a rusty 2008 Focus turned into a whole day I won't forget
Customer dropped off a 2008 Ford Focus last Tuesday with a growl in the front end, so I quoted a wheel bearing and figured two hours tops. The axle nut was rusted solid and my 1/2 inch impact just laughed at it, so I soaked it in PB Blaster and let it sit while I did an oil change. When I came back the whole knuckle was so pitted I had to torch the bolt and run a thread chaser through it just to get the new hub seated. It ended up being a 7 hour job and the guy only paid $340 because I quoted it flat. Do you guys eat the labor on rusty jobs like that or do you call the customer first?
