I went back to a shop I worked at 6 years ago and the difference in their paint work was shocking
Stopped by my old shop in Phoenix last week to grab a tool from a buddy. The orange peel on their jobs now is almost non existent compared to when I was there spraying. They switched over to a higher end Sata gun setup and started using a different clear coat from Axalta. Has anyone else gone back to a place they used to work and noticed a huge jump in quality?

Blake said "the Axalta switch is a big deal" - wait, you mean they actually switched to Axalta and it WORKED? Because I remember spraying that stuff in a cold booth once and it came out looking like sandpaper no matter what I did. That's wild they got it to lay down that smooth now.

The Axalta switch is a big deal, but the Sata upgrade probably made the biggest difference, right? Did you notice if their prep work changed at all or was it just the spray equipment?

Prep work? You mean the 20 minutes they saved by not having to sand as much because the new clear lays down like glass? I'm convinced half the improvement is just the fresh air in the booth from the newer guns making them feel like pros again. Either way, the cars are coming out wetter than a soda can in July, so I'm not complaining. Did you ever spray the old Axalta stuff in a cold booth? That was a nightmare.
