Hit 500 panels painted this year and did the math on what it actually cost me
I keep a tally on the wall of my booth for every panel that goes through. Last week I marked number 500 for this year. Sounds good right? Then I sat down and figured out my actual material cost per panel, and it came out to $38 on average, which is way higher than the $25 I had in my head. Turns out I was counting basecoat but forgetting the sealer, the reducer, the gun cleaning solvent, and the booth filters. Add in the three redos I had to eat because of solvent pop, and that number climbs fast. I'm not complaining about the work, but I am rethinking how I quote jobs. Has anyone else tracked their real cost per panel and gotten a number that surprised them?
