Water heater gave up on a Tuesday morning at 5am

I was getting ready for work last week and went to take a shower. Ice cold water. My Rheem unit from 2014 finally died. Plumber came out and said the tank was cracked and I needed a full replacement. Cost me $1,800 for a new 50 gallon. Has anyone else had a water heater fail with no warning like that?

Respectfully disagree, that's pretty standard for water heaters. They usually give you zero warning when the tank fails, it's just how they work.

Funny you say that. My buddy had a water heater that was making this weird ticking noise for like a month. He thought it was nothing. Then one morning he woke up to his whole basement flooded with two inches of water. The tank just split open right down the side. The noise was probably the metal expanding or something but nobody tells you that.
