HOA told me to paint my mailbox. I said no and it got ugly.

Been in my Marietta neighborhood 8 years. Never painted that mailbox once. HOA sent a letter last month saying it was "faded and noncompliant." Told them to get lost. Then they started fining me $50 a week. I went to the board meeting ready to fight. Found out half the board never even read the covenant rules themselves. Turns out paint color is recommended not required. They had to drop the fines and apologize. Has anyone else had HOAs try to enforce rules they just made up on the spot?

Follow the covenant rules like a map and find out half the board is reading a different map altogether. It's the same thing with those neighborhood Facebook groups where people make up rules about parking or noise that aren't real. People just assume authority exists because someone says it does. Good for you for making them prove it.

Yeah I have to admit I was one of those people who just went along with whatever the board said. Figured they must know what they're talking about since they're in charge. But you're right, half the time they're just making stuff up on the fly. Last HOA meeting I went to someone pulled out the actual bylaws and shut down three fake "rules" people had been enforcing for years. Felt pretty stupid for not checking myself earlier.
