HOA fee fight over a mailbox, my cul-de-sac is now split in two

Our neighborhood in Marietta had a huge blowup last Friday after the HOA sent out 47 letters about non-compliant mailboxes. Half the street thinks the $250 fine is fair because we signed the rules, the other half wants to riot because the regulations were never enforced for 6 years. My neighbor Bill got cited for a perfectly good mailbox he installed back in 2019, and now he's printing petitions to dissolve the whole board. The board president says they're just following the covenant, but she also just spent $1,800 on new entrance landscaping. So which side are you on, stick to the written rules or fight for what's been allowed for years? Has anyone else had their street turn into a battleground over something this petty?

We got hit with the same thing over mailboxes, and our HOA backed down once we showed them 6 years of meeting minutes where they never mentioned it once, so Bill's got a real case if he pushes it. Did they send any warnings before the fines, or just go straight to $250?
