Dropped $1,800 on a whole house surge protector after the July storms in Alpharetta
Last summer a strike nearby fried my garage fridge, the microwave, and the board on my HVAC unit. The repair guy quoted me $1,800 to put in a whole home surge protector at the panel, and I almost passed on it. Then a neighbor in Alpharetta said her place got hit too and she lost a TV and her sprinkler system. Anyone here run one, and did you go with the panel unit or just power strips everywhere?
Man, $1,800 sounds about right for a panel unit and honestly it's the only thing that actually protects the stuff hardwired into your house. Power strips only save what's plugged into them, so your HVAC board, garage fridge, and sprinkler system would still be sitting ducks. I'd take it a step further and add a few point of use strips on the TVs and computers too, since a panel unit clamps the big surges but smaller ones can still sneak through. Did the $1,800 include the install labor and the unit itself, or was that just parts?
