TIL I've been stacking my astro photos wrong for months, wasting half my clear nights.

I finally watched a tutorial from a guy in Tucson and realized my stacking software was set to 'average' instead of 'sigma clip', which was why my star clusters always looked so soft and washed out.

Sigma clip is a game changer for star clusters, makes them way sharper.

It really helps with those dense globular clusters too.

Hold up, are we really calling soft star clusters a waste of half your clear nights? I mean yeah sigma clip is nice and all but I've been stacking with average for years and my photos still look fine when I post them. Unless you're printing billboard size posters nobody is pixel peeping your globular clusters that hard.
