Snagged a decent shot of the Andromeda Galaxy with just a tripod and a kit lens

I've been trying to photograph anything beyond the moon for months with my entry-level DSLR and the 18-55mm lens it came with. Read online that you basically need a tracker or a telescope, but I got curious after seeing some stacking tutorials on YouTube. Took about 200 frames at 2.5 seconds each last Tuesday near a dark patch outside of town, then stacked them in DeepSkyStacker. The result was way better than I expected - a fuzzy but recognizable spiral shape. Has anyone else had luck with basic gear before saving up for the expensive stuff?

Man, so much of life's best stuff happens when you don't have the "right" gear.

Don't you think having the right stuff helps you actually show up for those moments though?
