I finally noticed the light pollution difference at Cherry Springs

Drove up to Cherry Springs State Park last weekend and comparing the same Andromeda shot from my backyard in Harrisburg to the one I took there, the star count went from maybe 30 visible stars to over 200 in the raw frames, has anyone else been surprised by how much darker a truly dark site feels?

Did the Bortle scale actually feel different in person, or was it more about that whole "milky way is actually visible" thing that threw you off? Asking cause I’ve read about it forever but never been to a real dark site.
