Yeah, that tracks... tried to catch the Leonids up at Glacier Point once and it was just a wall of red headlamps and camera screens. Felt like being stuck in a bad tech ad. Nora_bennett72 is totally right about the escape thing, you go out there for quiet and get a crowd instead. My shot of the night was some guy's silhouette against his own light-up rental car sign.

My buddy tried that last year and got swarmed by a thousand other photographers with tripods. He said the light pollution from all the cars and headlamps was worse than the city. Kinda ruins the whole dark sky vibe, doesn't it?

Wait, a thousand photographers? That sounds like a concert crowd, not a stargazing trip. I can't even picture setting up a tripod with that many people around. Your poor buddy must have spent more time dodging elbows than looking at the sky. It's sad when the thing you go out there to escape ends up following you.
